Asks US ambassador to ignore ‘false narratives’ about Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the United States to ensure its sources of information about the country cuts across all areas.

The president said this on Tuesday in Abuja when he received letters of credence from Mary Leonard, US ambassador to Nigeria.

On Saturday, the US had placed Nigeria on its special watch-list (SWL) for governments that have engaged in or tolerated severe violations of religious freedom.

The president said the listing of Nigeria for human rights concerns created an impression that some people were being unfairly treated or marginalised in the country.

Buhari said some people might provide misleading and manipulative narratives about Nigeria for self-serving purposes, while ignoring the larger picture of a united country.

“I know that those with access have created an impression of being marginalised,” Garba Shehu, presidential spokesperson, quoted Buhari to have said.

“I sit here with a clear conscience. I took an oath and I am honouring the office. It is not an easy task to work for the unity of the country, and I am doing my best. During your stay in the country I am asking you to ensure that your sources of strategic information cut across.”

The president urged the envoy to use the opportunity of her posting to Nigeria to get the facts on the country.

“General Buhari budgeted ₦179 billion for National Livestock Transformation Plan, and ₦48 billion for education in his budget. Now you see that COWS matter more to Buhari than educating Nigerian youths,” Reno Omokri, an author, lawyer and Ex-aide to Former President Goodluck Jonathan said.

.

This is his reaction to the 2020 budget passed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Omokri, who took to his verified twitter account on Friday, said, “By budgeting ₦48 billion for education (12% of what Jonathan budgeted for education in 2014), General Buhari is telling youths that education is not important. If you need a certificate, go get an AFFIDAVIT!

“There are 32 million children and youths of school age in Nigeria and General @MBuhari budgets ₦48 billion for their education. There are 469 members of the National Assembly and General Buhari budgets ₦125 billion for them. How can we ever progress like this?”.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria and Ghana have recorded achievements in fighting corruption.

This follows the announcement of the interception of an attempted plot against the authorities in Ghana.

President Buhari has therefore issued the following statement:

“Nigeria and Ghana are leading partners in ECOWAS, and Transparency International, and Afrobarometer’s Africa Index 2019 attested that both countries have recorded exceptional advances in fighting corruption.

“When you take on powerful and corrupt vested interests successfully, sometimes they seek to push back. As the saying goes, ‘if you fight corruption, corruption will fight back’.

“The only acceptable form of governance in our region in this 21st century is through democratic elections. It is the only way to install – and the only way to change – an administration. The days of coups and government without votes are over.

“All Africans hold the nation of Ghana in the highest esteem as the first post-colonial country to gain independence and the first African country to hold multi-party elections by universal suffrage. Ghana is the first, true African democracy.

“We in Nigeria hold out – as always – our hands in support and friendship to our brothers and sisters in Ghana”.
