In a recent post made known to the public on his micro-blogging site, twitter he said, US will not go back in bring those countries that are persecuting people of faith to book.

Pompoe said: “The U.S. has been, and will continue to be, unwavering in its commitment to #religiousfreedom. No country, entity, or individual will be able to persecute people of faith with impunity. These religious freedom designations show that when faith is attacked, we will act.”

The U.S. government has added Nigeria to a “Special Watch List (SWL)” of countries that have engaged in or tolerated “severe violations of religious freedom.”

This is coming at a time many Nigerians and the international community have criticised the Nigerian government for its serial violations of court orders and the shrinking civic and media space in the country.

The inclusion of Nigeria in the religion violations list was announced by the U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.

“On December 18, 2019, the Department of State re-designated Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as Countries of Particular Concern under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 for having engaged in or tolerated “systematic, ongoing, [and] egregious violations of religious freedom.”

“The Department renewed the placement of Comoros, Russia, and Uzbekistan on a Special Watch List (SWL) for governments that have engaged in or tolerated “severe violations of religious freedom,” and added Cuba, Nicaragua, Nigeria, and Sudan to this list,” Mr Pompeo said.

According to Mr Pompeo, the U.S. also designated al-Nusra Front, al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula, al-Qa’ida, al-Shabab, Boko Haram, the Houthis, ISIS, ISIS-Khorasan, and the Taliban as Entities of Particular Concern.

USCIRF report

The 2018 report of the United States Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which recommended Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), noted that religious freedom trended negatively in 2018.

“Religious freedom conditions in Nigeria trended negatively in 2018. The Nigerian government at the national and state levels continued to tolerate violence and discrimination on the basis of religion or belief, and suppressed the freedom to manifest religion or belief.”

The report added that “religious sectarian violence increased during the year, with Muslims and Christians attacked based on their religious and ethnic identity”

Another case cited is the violation of rights of Shi’a members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).

“The Nigerian military and government continued to violate the religious freedom and human rights of the Shi’a members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN). IMN leader Sheikh Ibrahim Al Zak Zaky remained in detention”.

“However, in 12 Muslim-majority northern Nigerian states, federalism has allowed the adoption of Islamic Shari’ah law in the criminal codes. The Nigerian constitution also establishes the roles of customary law and Shari’ah courts for Islamic personal law, family”.

PREMIUM TIMES has reported on how the Nigerian government has continued to clamp down on Shiites with maximum force since 2015. Over 300 members of the Shiite IMN were killed in December 2015 for blocking a public road.

The leader of the IMN, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenah, have been detained since then for their alleged roles in the death of a soldier during the massacre. Nobody has been prosecuted for the mass murder of the Shiites by Nigerian soldiers.

Dozens of Shiites demanding the release of Mr El-Zakzaky and his wife have been killed since the 2015 incident.

The Nigerian government and the Kaduna State government have in the past accused the Shiites of disobeying constituted authority and not recognising the government.

The government also denied that it was tolerating or engaging in violations of religious freedom, saying crimes such as those occurring in the Middle-belt states of Benue and Plateau were more economic, between herders and farmers, than religious.

The government also said it was doing everything possible to tackle such crimes across the country.

Perhaps based on the clarifications by the government, the U.S. did not designate Nigeria a CPC but rather included the country in the lower level SWL.

Reactions

International human rights lawyer, Emmanuel Ogebe, in reaction to the development, highlighted the shortcomings of the USCIRF report saying it lacked accuracy and was not robust enough.

“We are happy to note that despite these shortcomings, the US government saw enough to escalate Nigeria’s designation to the penultimate Warning Watchlist. Nigeria is the most dangerous place in the world to be a Christian and it is high time this is recognized,” he said.

“With the atrocities committed by the Major Gen. Buhari in the 2019 reporting period including the elimination of Christians from top government positions and replacement with  Muslims, such as Chief Justice Onnoghen amongst others, it is very likely that Nigeria will join the list of the global worst persecutors by next year,” Mr Ogebe said in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES on Friday.

The rights activist, however, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to be fair in his treatment of all Nigerians, something the presidency has always said Mr Buhari does.

In addition, U.S. Congressman Chris Smith welcomed the addition of Nigeria to the SWL.

Mr Smith, who had visited Nigeria to consult with stakeholders on religious freedom, promised that  “We will pay particular attention to Nigeria and the deteriorating situation under the government of President Muhammadu Buhari in the year ahead.”

He added, “President Buhari must address the murderous attacks conducted by Fulani extremists on Christians in the Middle Belt and the oppression of Shia Muslims in Kaduna State.”

Congressman Smith stayed further, “I also call upon the State Department to monitor the actions of Miyetti Allah with regard to its complicity in attacks by Fulani extremists.”

Egyptian Tv News Report Confirms That Turkey Supplies Weapons To Nigeria's Boko Haram.

Egyptian Tv News Report Confirms That Turkey Supplies Weapons To Nigeria's Boko Haram.

MASTER REPORTERS GLOBAL NEWS

Breaking the news from around the globe.

Raymond Ibrahim, a Shillman Fellow in Journalism at the David Horowitz Freedom Center, and an expert on the Middle East and Islam, appeared on Thursday's afternoon's edition of CBN's Newswatch to talk more about Turkey's alleged ties to Islamic terrorism.

Turkey is clearly a terrorist state with a broad reach, according to an Egyptian television news program.

Ten.tv reports Turkey is supplying weapons to Boko Haram in Nigeria.

Ten.tv host Nasha't al-Deyhi reported on a leak confirming an intercepted phone call from a few years back – confirming the action.

He reported in part: "Today's leak confirms without a doubt that Erdogan, his state, his government, and his party are transferring weapons from Turkey to – this is a shock, to where you may ask – to Nigeria; and to whom? – to the Boko Haram organization."

Raymond Ibrahim is the Shillman Fellow in Journalism at the David Horowitz Freedom Center and an expert on the Middle East and Islam. During an interview Thursday on CBN's Newswatch, Ibrahim said he's not surprised by the Ten.tv report.

"The tape was made in 2014 or 15 and it was reported widely in certain areas, in the US and the west not so much and not much came out of it," Ibrahim said. "The reason I think is that (Turkish President Recep Tayyip) Erdogan didn't have his fingers so much in Islamist politics outside of his own nation."

"But now that we've seen Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the ISIS Islamic state caliph that was killed recently, and he was found just three miles from the Turkish border, which is, in fact, the last bastion of jihadi-so-called 'freedom fighters' attacking the Syrian government," he told CBN News.

"It has brought it up again, he (Erdogan) is supporting ISIS," Ibrahim noted. "Now we're remembering and that was I think the point of the Egyptian show, we're bringing back to see that there's some continuity here. He's involved with some of the worst Islamic terror groups. If you remember, Boko Haram, whose name loosely means 'western education is forbidden', (Haram) was basically doing what ISIS was doing and is notorious for – years before ISIS was doing it.

"One of the things international observers have been noticing, especially increasingly, is that their armaments, their weapons are very sophisticated," he continued. "It's even spilled into the Fulani tribesmen in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. For example, in Burkina Faso, also in western Africa the attacks on Christians have become horrific in just the last few months."

As CBN News reported, a senior State Department official said last week that Turkey is backing forces in Syria who have the same radical ideology as ISIS.

"The problem is that the people doing the fighting are these ill-disciplined Arab militias, some of whom we've worked within the past when we were arming the opposition, but many of whom are (a) ill-disciplined, and (b) relatively radical, and their ideology is essentially Islamic ideology," the official said.

A fragile government in northern Syria called the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAA) released a statement on Tuesday saying that Erdogan seeks to subjugate them through radical Islam.

"Erdogan plans to turn are free, democratic region back into turmoil under radical Islamic occupation," the government said.

Critics of Erdogan's invasion say he is trying to revive the Ottoman Empire and establish a new caliphate.

"Their open intention is to restore the original caliphate which was disbanded in 1924," said Dalton Thomas of Frontier Alliance International.

Recently Turkey's defense minister posted a map to his social media that shows portions of Greece, Syria, and Iraq as part of a greater Turkey.

Defense Minister Hulusi Akar posted a message alongside the map: "We have no eyes on anyone's soil. We will only take what's ours."

The map reflects the 1920 Ottoman National Pact that includes lands Turkey believes it deserved at the end of World War I.

Breaking: US Sanctions Cameroon From Trade Pack For Continuous Violation Of Human Rights

Breaking: US Sanctions Cameroon From Trade Pack For Continuous Violation Of Human Rights

MASTER REPORTERS GLOBAL NEWS

Breaking the news from around the globe.

US President Donald Trump and Cameroon President Paul Biya

Yaounde, Cameroon (CNN) — The US is cutting Cameroon from a trade pact over allegations of human rights violations.

President Donald Trump said the West African nation failed to address concerns over its "persistent gross violations of internationally recognized human rights'' allegedly committed by Cameroon's security forces.

The US also cut more than $17 million in security aid and support to Cameroon in February over concerns about its human rights record.

In a letter addressed to Congress on Thursday, Trump cited accusations of torture and extrajudicial killings of citizens by the country's military as reasons for removing Cameroon from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

AGOA helps sub-Saharan countries improve trade ties with the US. Eligible countries must meet criteria including a good human rights record to benefit from the trade.

Related Article: US to cut aid to Cameroon due to alleged human rights violations

"The US government remains deeply concerned about persistent gross violations of human rights being committed by the Cameroonian government against its own citizens," Deputy US Trade Representative C.J. Mahoney said in a statement.

Cameroon is reeling under the impact of an Anglophone revolt that began in its English-speaking provinces in 2016after residents complained of being marginalized by the largely Francophone government.

Security forces also have been in a standoff with separatists in these areas, and both sides have been accused of killing and torturing citizens in the crossfire.

Cameroon's Minister Delegate at the Ministry of External Relations Felix Mbayu claimed the sanctions were not linked to its human rights record.

"The simple truth is that the US is unhappy with a certain stance we take with China," he said.

In February, China wrote off some of Cameroon's debts. China also is carrying out projects in Cameroon to forge better ties with the government. Unlike China and other world powers, the US was not a major trade partner, Mbayu said.

"The government has no move to make; we have other partners like China, Russia and Singapore who are ready to do business with us... We have no reaction to the US," Mbayu told CNN.

"The least of our worry now is about the AGOA issue. By the way, it is a very small part of Cameroon's relationship with the United States," he added.

The minister estimated Cameroon's exports to the US under the trade legislation are $5 million, mostly consisting of agricultural and petroleum products he said the US "cannot do without."

In a statement reaffirming its commitment to West African nationdespite the sanctions, the US Embassy in Cameroon valued the country's export to the US at $220 million in 2018. It added that more than a quarter of the exports came off the AGOA legislation with 90 percent from petroleum exports.

Scientist Reveals That Eating Human Flesh Is Another Tactics To Fight Climate Change

Scientist Reveals That Eating Human Flesh Is Another Tactics To Fight Climate Change

MASTER REPORTERS GLOBAL NEWS

Breaking the news from around the globe.

Swedish behavioral scientist Magnus SöderlundTV4

A Swedish scientist speaking at Stockholm summit last week offered an unusual possible tactic in combating global climate change: eating human flesh.

Stockholm School of Economics professor and researcher Magnus Soderlund reportedly said he believes eating human meat, derived from dead bodies, might be able to help save the human race if only a world society were to “awaken the idea.”

Soderlund’s argument for human cannibalism was front and center during a panel talk called “Can You Imagine Eating Human Flesh?” at the Gastro Summit, reports the Epoch Times. “Conservative” taboos against cannibalism, he said, can change over time if people simply tried eating human flesh.

Some of the talking points at the seminar included whether humans were too selfish to “live sustainably” and if cannibalism is the solution to food sustainability in the future.

When asked during an interview after his talk if he personally would try human flesh, Soderlund said he was open to the idea.

“I feel somewhat hesitant but to not appear overly conservative … I’d have to say … I’d be open to at least tasting it,” he told Sweden’s TV4.

He suggested more plausible options such as eating pets and insects.

Before human meat becomes the next cuisine trend, however, history shows there are potential health risks to cannibalism.

A tribe in Papua New Guinea practiced eating their dead as an alternative to allowing them to be consumed by worms, according to the Standard. The cultural practice led to an epidemic of a disease called Kuru, also known as laughing death.

According to the US National Library of Medicine, the disease is caused by an infectious protein found in contaminated human brain tissue. The practice of cannibalism among the people of New Guinea came to an end in 1960

Breaking : 186 Doctors From Seven Countries Write Letter To Buhari Over EL-Zakzaky Health Condition

Breaking : 186 Doctors From Seven Countries Write Letter To Buhari Over EL-Zakzaky Health Condition

MASTER REPORTERS GLOBAL NEWS

Breaking the news from around the globe.

A group of doctors from seven countries – Pakistan, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq has written a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari pointing to Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky’s physical conditions, and asking the Nigerian government to transfer him to a well-equipped hospital as soon as possible.

The letter revealed El-Zakzaky’s medical and health status which required urgent attention.

Read The  letter in full details:

“In the name of God, The healer
From the community of Doctors
To the President of the Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Buhari.

In the past several months, the world has constantly received troubling news regarding the health of one of the prominent figures in Nigeria, Shaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. Both Skaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife are kept in prison and the health status of both of them is very alarming.

We have chosen to be doctors even after knowing that this job is very difficult and troublesome, but we chose to save people’s lives and preferred the health of the society over our personal interests.

According to the medical reports regarding the health status of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky:

1. He is suffering from a total blindness in the left eye, and is also suffering from vision problems in the right eye including glaucoma and progressive macular atrophy. According to the diagnosis of the visiting physicians, Shaikh Zakzaky will lose his vision sooner or later if the current circumstances do not change.

2. He has shown symptoms of Ischemic heart disease which can lead to Myocardial Infraction.

3. He is also suffering from severe cervical spondylosis which has resulted to nerve root compression and symptoms are progressive causing insomnia.

4. The experiments show that he has heavy metal toxicity including Lead and Cadmium. Laboratory tests that are performed on May 31st, 2019 show that blood lead level is 171.94µg/dl. Later on June 18th, 2019 this level was reported to be 231.48µg while in the last laboratory test the blood lead level was three times more than the toxicity level (grade 5 of poisoning).

Based on the points highlighted above, Shaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky should be transferred to a well- equipped medical center that has Neuro-ophthalmologist, glaucoma specialist and low vision expert, cardiologist, orthopedist and neurologist. Also he may need to have a surgery to reduce intraocular pressure.

We, doctors of different nationalities cannot take the health of any human for granted. This is something that is inherent in our obligation as doctors. Ignoring the critical health status of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky can end up in irreparable consequences.

We request the government and parliament of Nigeria to immediately transfer him to a well-equipped hospital to prevent any unfortunate incidents.

Fans of Liverpool and Manchester City were involved in a mass brawl on the London Underground.

Multiple supporters of both sides are seen to be scrapping on the Metropolitan Line service ahead of Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley.

Liverpool and City were facing off in the annual season opener, which is competed between two of England's best teams from the previous campaign.

In a video shared on social media, punches are seen to be exchanged in the vestibule area of a tube train.

The train, likely on its way to Wembley Park station, was parked at Great Portland Street station when the violence broke out.

Punches were clearly thrown as violence ensued on the tube

One set of supporters is seen on the platform, while the others were inside the entrance of the train. The fighting began at the doors of the train.

At one point, a member of the crowd can be seen climbing up from the floor, while another man can be seen falling backwards later in the clip.

Among the crowd, one fan is seen to have a bottle of beer in his hand as the violence ensues.

Other gentlemen in the clip are later seen trying to calm down proceedings.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered Russia's military to join efforts to fight forest fires that have engulfed nearly 30,000 square kilometers (11,580 sq. miles) of territory in Siberia and the Russian Far East.

The Russian military on Wednesday joined efforts to fight forest fires that have engulfed nearly 30,000 square kilometres (11,580 sq. miles) of territory in Siberia and the Russian Far East — an area the size of Belgium.

The move, which includes sending military transport planes and helicopters that can drop water on fires, came after an order from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russian authorities have declared a state of emergency in five areas, including all of the Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk regions, which lie north of Mongolia. Siberia’s Krasnoyarsk region, which stretches all the way to the Kara Sea and the Arctic Ocean, can be seen blanketed in smoke by satellite photos from NASA and Europe’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS).

No injuries or evacuations have been reported so far from the fires, many of which appear to have been started by lightning strikes in “dry thunderstorms” in which precipitation disperses before reaching the ground.

But the fires, which were being spread by strong winds, have produced heavy smoke has clogged the air in several cities, including Novosibirsk, Russia’s third-largest city with a population of 1.6 million in southwestern Siberia.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev visited the city of Krasnoyarsk on Wednesday and gave a glum assessment of the forest fires.

“The situation is difficult. Many forests are burning, smog and smoke are observed over many populated areas. The prognosis at this moment is not happy,” he said.

Late Wednesday, the White House issued a statement saying President Donald Trump had spoken with Putin earlier in the day and “expressed concern over the vast wildfires afflicting Siberia.”

Russia’s agency for aerial forest protection, Avialesookhrana, said about 2,700 firefighters were working to put out the blazes but it said about 28,000 square kilometres (10,800 sq. miles) of the fires were in difficult-to-reach areas. Those forest fires, it said, were not being fought because the costs and risks of doing so were higher than the potential damages the fires could cause to unpopulated areas.

Russia’s vast stretches of forest have often been hit by widespread fires in the summer months. This year, however, the world experienced the warmest June on record.

“It’s not for the first time that we’re having this catastrophe in our country,” said Mikhail Kreindlin, a Greenpeace activist in Moscow. “Why there is so much attention to it this year is because the smoke from the fires has reached the cities, with activists who (have) started to raise the issue.”

Protests demanding action against the heavy smoke from the fires were planned for Thursday in Moscow outside the Ecology Ministry. Greenpeace also planned to submit a petition with more than 200,000 signatures to the Russian government urging a better response to wildfires and more preventive action.

Breaking News: Israel To Launch Satellite That Will Cover Africa Come 3rd Of August ,2019

MASTER REPORTERS GLOBAL NEWS
Breaking the news from around the globe.

Spacecom, a telecommunication firm which operates the Amos fleet of Israeli satellites, will launch its next satellite on August 3. which  will cover Africa.

The Amos-17 is an advanced digital satellite that will provide communications services over Africa.
This would be the first satellite of its kind that provides the continent with high quality broadcasts and adequate frequency, in a way that fits the needs of Africa, which is known for its unstable weather that affects transmission.
Amos-17 is scheduled to launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and will orbit 36,000 kilometers above central Africa, providing TV, internet and cellular services as well as services to governments.
It will replace the Amos-16, which was launched in 2016.
Spacecom hopes a successful launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, will end a rough patch. In 2015 the company lost contact with its Amos-5 satellite and a year later Amos-6 was destroyed days before its scheduled launch when a SpaceX rocket exploded.

Breaking : Police Fired Tear Gass On Hong Kong Protesters Over Banned Protest

Police in Hong Kong have fired tear gas at thousands of pro-democracy protesters marching in an area where 45 people were injured in suspected triad attacks at a station last weekend.

Officers in riot gear shot the gas into a crowd of demonstrators who gathered in Yuen Long in defiance of police orders and despite officers' appeals to leave.

Thousands of pro-democracy protesters stormed the area in sweltering heat on Saturday afternoon.

Police, who filmed marchers as they went, had banned the rally on safety grounds but activists said they would push ahead.

Image:Protesters marching in defiance of a police ban

Many chanted anti-police slogans such as "Nasty police!" and "Hong Kong police, they know the law, break the law".

The situation is "tense," Sky's Asia correspondent Tom Cheshire said.

"People say they won't cause trouble, but if they're hit, they will hit back hard," he said.

The march is taking place in Hong Kong's New Territories in the north of the city, where suspected triads attacked commuters and protesters last weekend.

Triads are organised criminal networks and are also known as the Chinese mafia. They usually run protection rackets, prostitution and low-level drug supply.

Many in the pro-democracy movement accuse the police of reacting slowly to the violence, while others blame local villagers they suspect of having close links to triad groups.

"The situation is escalating, and (Saturday) could be the start of a more violent period," one said.

Last Sunday, 100 white shirted men stormed the Yuen Long station hours after protesters marched through central Hong Kong and defaced China's Liaison Office - the leading symbol of Beijing's authority over the former British colony.

They attacked black-clad protesters returning from Hong Kong island, passers-by, journalists and lawmakers with pipes and clubs, leaving 45 people injured.

Cico Lau, 25, whose brother was among those beaten last Sunday, said: "I come out as I want to express my dissatisfaction with police. What had happened last week was totally unacceptable."

The demonstrations were initially triggered by a bill, since abandoned, that would allow extraditions to mainland China.

But they have become a referendum on the Hong Kong government and the eroding of the city's freedoms under Beijing's control.

Protesters are also demanding independent inquiries into police use of force, the resignation of Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam and full democratic reform.

The New Prime Minister Of Britain Has Duty To Avoid Leaving EU Without Deal

       MASTER REPORTERS GLOBAL NEWS

Breaking news from around the globe.

The Yomiuri ShimbunNow that Boris Johnson has become the British prime minister, he must rethink his comments and deeds aimed simply at making him more popular with the public and instead adopt a more responsible approach to politics.

Johnson’s first objective should be to avoid Britain leaving the European Union without an agreement locked in place — the no-deal Brexit — and seek out a solution that widely reflects the will of the British people.

Johnson, a former British foreign secretary, has won the race to lead the ruling Conservative Party and was to be sworn in as prime minister.

A hard-line Brexiteer, Johnson claimed the withdrawal agreement reached between former Prime Minister Theresa May’s administration and the EU could leave Britain bound to a customs union with the bloc and also some of its regulations. Johnson insisted he would seek to renegotiate a new deal with the EU to restore “British sovereignty.”

The problem is that his plan is rather unrealistic. The EU is sticking fast to its position of not revising the withdrawal agreement.

The EU extended the departure deadline from the end of March to the end of October as a grace period for Britain to come up with plans to leave the bloc. However, finding points of agreement in the remaining three months will be difficult.

In his victory speech, Johnson said, “We are going to get Brexit done on October 31.” Johnson also indicated he was willing to take Britain out of the European Union without a deal, which would suddenly reintroduce tariffs on trade between them.

Johnson’s changing tune

A no-deal Brexit would trigger economic and social turmoil for both Britain and the EU. There are concerns this could even have a negative impact on the global economy. Johnson’s comments that fawn upon anti-EU sentiment are irresponsible.

Adopting more realistic policies will be crucial. It is essential that consideration be given to lawmakers who want Britain to remain in the EU and “soft Brexiteers” who prize Britain’s ties with the bloc, during the departure negotiation process and in debates in Parliament. Another extension of the Brexit deadline should be considered, too.

Strong calls for retaining close ties with the European Union have been made in Scotland. Movements seeking Scotland’s independence from Britain are being rekindled. Johnson’s new administration will be put to the test over how it plans to preserve the unity of Britain.

Nagging doubts remain over Johnson’s qualities as a politician.

When Johnson was the mayor of London, he hailed the importance of the EU single market to Britain’s economy and boasted that immigrants were contributing to British society. But during the 2016 national referendum on whether Britain should remain in the European Union, Johnson was a leading figure in the “leave” campaign and called for bringing immigration under control.

Opportunistic remarks and actions make it impossible to achieve political stability.

Mounting tensions with Iran over the seizure of a British-flagged oil tanker also is a pressing problem. Johnson will need to work closely with Germany, France and other relevant nations to deal with this issue.

Johnson has a close relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has championed an “America first” approach. Close attention must be paid to the impact Britain-U.S. cooperation will have on the international order.

Robert Mueller Kicked Off Trump's 'No Obstruction' Claim During Congress Hearing

MASTER REPORTERS GLOBAL NEWS...

“No,” Mueller said. “It is not what the report said.”

By Chris York

Robert Mueller has told a congressional hearing that Donald Trump’s claims he was “totally exonerated” by the special counsel report are not true.

Appearing at a highly-anticipated congressional hearing on Wednesday, the former special counsel said he could not clear the president of obstruction of justice.

“The president was not exculpated for the acts that he allegedly committed,” Mueller said at the opening of the hearings into his investigation of Russian interference to help Trump win the 2016 election.

Mueller’s comments mean Trump’s repeated claims of “NO OBSTRUCTION”, the latest made just today, are wide of the mark.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

NO COLLUSION, NO OBSTRUCTION!

Mueller’s appearance before congressional interrogators opened televised hearings that Democrats hope will weaken US President Donald Trump’s re-election prospects in ways that Mueller’s book-length report did not.

Republicans immediately defended Trump and criticised the Democrats for continuing to go after him.

The back-to-back Capitol Hill appearances, Mueller’s first since wrapping up his two-year Russia probe last spring, carry the extraordinary spectacle of a prosecutor discussing in public a criminal investigation he conducted into a sitting US president.

The first opened with Jerrold Nadler, the Democratic chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, praising Mueller’s career and background.

The hearings come at a moment of deep divisions in Congress and the country, and they raise serious questions about whether Mueller will change anyone’s hardened opinions about impeachment and the future of Trump’s presidency.

Mueller, known for his taciturn nature, has warned that he will not stray beyond what has already been revealed in his report.

And the Justice Department has instructed Mueller to stay strictly within those parameters, giving him a formal directive to point to if he faces questions he does not want to answer.

Trump lashed out early Wednesday ahead of the hearing, saying on Twitter that “Democrats and others” are trying to fabricate a crime and pin it on “a very innocent President”.

“Why didn’t Robert Mueller investigate the investigators?” Trump said in his tweet.

Trump has made Mueller a regular target of attack over the past two years in an attempt to undermine his credibility and portray him as biased and compromised.

Over the last week, Trump began to frequently ask confidants how he thought the hearing would go, and while he expressed no worry that Mueller would reveal anything damaging, he was irritated that the former special counsel was being given the national stage, according to two Republicans close to the White House.

Long aware of the power of televised images, Trump seethed to one adviser that he was annoyed Democrats would be given a tool to ramp up their investigations – and that the cable news networks would now have new footage of Mueller to play endlessly on loop in an effort to embarrass the White House.

Mueller’s approach to testifying may well deny Democrats the made-by-TV moments they want to rally their base.

But Republicans, too, are likely to be left without their sought-after confirmation that the Russia investigation was a politically tainted waste of time.

Trump this week feigned indifference to Mueller’s testimony , telling reporters in the Oval Office on Monday: “I’m not going to be watching – probably – maybe I’ll see a little bit of it.”

World Economy Will Slump To Weakest Rate This Year Due To President Trump's Trade War, Brexit - IMF Reveals

World Economy Will Slump To Weakest Rate This Year Due To President Trump's Trade War, Brexit - IMF Reveals

MASTER REPORTERS GLOBAL NEWS...

Fund says trade tensions and uncertainty around trade deals, including between UK and EU, must be resolved

Global economic growth will slow this year to the weakest rate in a decade, the International Monetary Fund has said, blaming Donald Trump’s trade war with China, Brexituncertainty and geopolitical tensions.

The IMF has downgraded its last forecasts, compiled in mid-March, and now expects growth of 3.2 per cent in 2019 and 3.5 per cent 2020.

There is a risk that even these lower forecasts prove to be too optimistic, the organisation said in its World Economic Outlook report published on Tuesday. One reason growth could be worse is an escalation in the US-China trade dispute, it added.

The US imposed tariffs on around $200bn of Chinese imports in May and banned American firms from doing business with Huawei, citing concerns that the Chinese company’s equipment could allow spying by Beijing on US citizens.

The IMF said there is a “pressing need” to resolve trade tensions and dispel the uncertainty around trade agreements, including between the UK and the EU.

Tariffs in the event of a no-deal Brexit

“Specifically, countries should not use tariffs to target bilateral trade balances or as a substitute for dialogue to pressure others for reforms,” the report stated.

Gita Gopinath, the IMF’s chief economist, stressed that point at a press conference, saying: “The need for global cooperation is urgent.”

The fund has also updated its forecasts for the UK. It predicts growth of 1.3 per cent this year – compared with 1.2 per cent forecast earlier – and 1.4 per cent in 2020, as before.

However, this is based on the assumption of an orderly Brexit with a transition period. The forecasts were produced before Boris Johnson was named as the new UK prime minister, raising the risk of a no-deal Brexit. Mr Johnson has vowed to take Britain out of the EU in October with or without a deal.

The IMF’s outlook for the world economy broadly chimes with forecasts by the UK’s National Institute of Economic and Social Research, released on Monday. NIESR predicted growth of around 3.25 percent this year and 3.4 next year, both down from 3.6 per cent in 2018.

But NIESR was more pessimistic than the IMF about Britain’s prospects, seeing growth of 1.2 per cent in 2019 and 1.1 per cent in 2020, provided a no-deal Brexit is avoided.

Former foreign secretary will succeed Theresa May as Britain’s next prime minister after beating Jeremy Hunt

'Deliver Brexit and unite the country': Boris Johnson's first speech as Tory leader – video

Boris Johnson will become Britain’s next prime minister after winning a convincing victory over Jeremy Hunt in the Conservative party leadership race.

The former mayor of London, who has long cherished an ambition to lead his country, won 66% of the votes – 92,153, to Hunt’s 46,656. Turnout was 87.4% among 159,320 party members.

In a characteristically lighthearted acceptance speech, Johnson conceded that even some of his own supporters may “wonder quite what they have done”.

He claimed the Tory party had historically demonstrated it could “manage the jostling instincts in the human heart” – such as those of owning a home and helping the poorest in society.

“Today, at this pivotal moment in our history, we again have to reconcile two noble sets of instincts – between the deep desire for friendship and free trade and mutual support and security and defence between Britain and our European partners; and the simultaneous desire, equally heartfelt, for democratic self-government in this country.”

He reminded his audience of ministers and party staff of his campaign mantra: “Deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn.”

Saying “some wag” had pointed out that this spelled “dud”, he joked that the final e – “E for energise” – had been left out. “I say to all the doubters: dude, we are going to energise the country!”

And Johnson said he would “get Brexit done by 31 October” with a “new spirit of can-do”.

“We are once again going to believe in ourselves and what we can achieve, and like some slumbering giant we are going to rise and ping off the guy-ropes of self-doubt and negativity.”

The result of the contest was announced by the joint chair of the backbench 1922 Committee, Cheryl Gillam. Her colleague, Charles Walker, first urged MPs to be “kinder” to the new leader than they had been to Theresa May.

Brandon Lewis, the Conservative party chair, introduced the slick event at a conference centre in Westminster, saying the race had shown that his party was fundamentally united.

Johnson’s victory was almost immediately welcomed by Donald Trump, who tweeted: “He will be great!”

But Johnson was left in no doubt about the opposition he will face from his own benches if he attempts to force through a no-deal Brexit. Alan Duncan quit as a Foreign Office minister on Monday and Anne Milton as education minister on Tuesday, rather than serve under Johnson.

The chancellor, Philip Hammond, the justice secretary, David Gauke, and the international development secretary, Rory Stewart, are expected to join them on the backbenches after the leadership change.

Stewart confirmed he would return to the backbenches on Wednesday, tweeting: “Backbench tomorrow serving Cumbria. Thank you all. More walking!”

Johnson addressed Tory MPs at a meeting of the 1922 Committee on Tuesday afternoon, as well as thanking party staff and his own campaign team.

He will not take office formally until Wednesday afternoon. May will face her final prime minister’s questions in the House of Commons before tendering her resignation to the Queen.

Johnson will then go to Buckingham Palace for his appointment to be confirmed before being driven to Downing Street to give a speech in front of the black door of No 10.

He takes charge at a perilous political moment. The Conservatives’ wafer-thin parliamentary working majority is expected to be eroded further next week – to just two – if the Liberal Democrats win the Brecon and Radnorshire byelection.

Johnson has faced a furious internal revolt even before arriving in Downing Street, with several key cabinet ministers, including Hammond saying they would resign rather than serve under him.

They have been alarmed by Johnson’s insistence that he is willing to countenance leaving the European Union without a deal on 31 October, rather than postpone Brexit once again, even if that meant proroguing parliament.

Despite painstaking media management, his campaign has been dogged by a series of controversies, including the revelation that police had been called to a noisy argument at the home he shares with his partner, Carrie Symonds.

Johnson was also blamed by some colleagues, including Duncan for the resignation of the ambassador to Washington, Sir Kim Darroch, after confidential diplomatic cables about Trump were leaked. Duncan said the former foreign secretary had thrown Darroch “under a bus”.

However, Johnson had been the runaway favourite to become leader after securing support from both wings of the bitterly divided Tory party, from the health secretary, Matt Hancock, to the chair of the European Research Group, Jacob Rees-Mogg.

He is regarded by colleagues as an impressive political campaigner, and the man with the best chance of seeing off the formidable electoral challenge from Nigel Farage’s Brexit party, which beat the Tories soundly in May’s European elections.

When does Boris Johnson become prime minister?

May will leave Downing Street on Wednesday after a three-year premiership overwhelmingly defined by the failure of her government to implement Brexit.

Johnson is likely to embark on fresh negotiations with EU leaders and key Brussels decision makers as soon as possible, with a view to securing changes to May’s deal in time for the Halloween deadline.

But with no secure majority, and Labour determined to demand a referendum on any deal he brings back from Brussels, many MPs believe he could be forced to call a general election within months in order to win a mandate for his plan.

Sir Alan Duncan

Boris Johnson survived a coup to keep him out of Downing Street last night, after a prominent Tory critic failed in an attempt to force a Commons confidence vote.

Sir Alan Duncan, who resigned from the Foreign Office yesterday, applied for an emergency debate on the next Conservative leader to establish whether Parliament “supports his wish to form a government”.

The vote, if lost, would have put pressure on Theresa May and her ability to recommend to the Queen that Mr Johnson, who is expected to win the leadership contest this morning, could form a government.

Speaker John Bercow rejected the application for the debate however, averting the potential for constitutional confusion.

Sir Alan insisted his actions were not motivated by “personal animosity of any sort” about Mr Johnson but said he had “very grave concerns that he flies by the seat of his pants and it’s all a bit haphazard and ramshackle”.

He told the BBC that the timing of his resignation was to “try and prompt an emergency debate in the Commons ahead of Boris becoming prime minister – and it’s probably going to be him – because it’s the first time in living memory we have had a minority government change prime minister in mid-term”.

Philip Hammond Says He Will Resign If Boris Johnson Becomes Prime Minister

He added: “A fundamental principle of our democracy is that the prime minister is the person who can command a majority in the House of Commons and that is untested, and it is in doubt.

“I thought, in order to avoid a constitutional crisis, we should test that on the Tuesday before he goes to the palace on the Wednesday and the Speaker has denied me and the House that opportunity.”

Sir Alan’s resignation is the first of several expected before tomorrow, when Mr Johnson is predicted to become prime minister.

Chancellor Philip Hammond, Justice Secretary David Gauke and International Development Secretary Rory Stewart have all said that they would quit before Mr Johnson takes office.

Sir Alan’s resignation came after Mr Johnson restated his firm intention to get the UK out of the European Union by the end of October, claiming a deal with Brussels could be reached if the country has the “will” and the “drive” for Brexit.

The former foreign secretary said if it was possible to get to the moon and back 50 years ago, then the problem of the Irish border could be solved.

The ballot of Conservative Party members closed at 5pm yesterday, with the result expected this morning.

Mrs May will tender her resignation to the Queen after taking prime minister’s questions in the Commons tomorrow afternoon, with the new Tory leader set to enter Number 10 soon after.

HARRRIET BREWIS

Violence erupted in Hong Kong last night as dozens of masked men stormed a train station and attacked protesters.

The men, suspected triad gangsters, flooded into the rural Yuen Long station and stormed a train where they launched a terrifying assault, footage has shown.

Eye-witnesses said white-shirted assailants appeared to target black-shirted passengers who had been at an anti-government march.

Footage posted on social media showed dozens of men attacking people with batons inside the station.

Forty-five people were injured, with one person in critical condition.

But police were slow to arrive at the scene, sparking questions from law-makers.

Democratic Party lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting, who was injured in the attack, said it took police more than an hour to arrive after he alerted them.

He said officers had failed to protect the public and allowed the triads to run rampant, according to government-funded broadcaster RTHK.

"Is Hong Kong now allowing triads to do what they want, beating up people on the street with weapons?," he asked reporters.

While fellow pro-democracy lawmaker Ray Chan asked in a tweet: "Hong Kong has one of the world's highest cop to population ratio. Where were [they?]"

A government worker, aged 22, described chaotic scenes as people scrambled off the train: "People started to run in all directions, just avoiding the gangsters," he said.

Police said they had not made any arrests but were still carrying out investigations.

The masked men stormed Yuen Long MTR station at about 10.30pm local time (2.30pm UK time), as people made their way back from protests in Hong Kong’s financial district.

The government said in a statement that "some people” congregated at the platforms of the Yuen Long station and train compartments, “attacking commuters".

"This is absolutely unacceptable to Hong Kong as a society that observes the rule of law. The SAR (Special Administrative Region) Government strongly condemns any violence and will seriously take enforcement actions," it added.

Hong Kong Police also confirmed: "Some people attacked commuters at the platforms of the Yuen Long MTR station and train compartments, resulting in multiple injuries."

Hong Kong police use tear gas on protesters

The mob attack followed a pro-democracy rally earlier on Sunday in the centre of Hong Kong, during which riot police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters.

Organisers of Sunday's protest say more than 430,000 people took part but police put the figure at 138,000.

Mass protests have been held for weeks, initially over an extradition deal with mainland China but now covering other issues on democracy in Hong Kong.

Protesters are demanding the full withdrawal of a bill to allow people to be extradited to mainland China for trial, where the courts are controlled by the Communist Party, fearing it would undermine Hong Kong's judicial independence.

They are also demanding independent inquiries into the use of police force against protesters.

Some police had been injured in the clashes after protesters hurled bricks, smoke grenades and petrol bombs, the force said in a statement.
