Journalists in the Delta State today joined in the nationwide protest against law enforcement agencies’ impunity on journalism practice in the country.
The protest which took place at the front of the Ministry of Information, Asaba was sequel to a directive by the National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abuja.
The Chairman of the Council, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu, who led the state council members and other journalists carrying placards with different inscriptions, said that it was time the union fought to stop all kinds of intimidation and molestation.
Comrade Ikeogwu noted that journalism practice had suffered in the hands of those expected to protect journalists, calling on the federal, state and local governments to see journalists as peace-loving and protect them as they carry on with their practice.
Also speaking, a former Chairman of the Council, Comrade Osita Biose, called on journalists to rise against oppression and intimidation even as he urged them to practice according to the ethics of the journalism profession, stressing that verification of fact was necessary.
The Vice Chairman of the Council, Comrade Patrick Ochei, the Secretary of the Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe and State Chairman of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Comrade Patricia Gbemudu, said that it was high time journalists in the country woke up from their slumber and fight for their right.
They said that journalism practice was never a crime as it was guaranteed by the Constitution of the Country and condemned the, harassment, intimation, unlawful arrests and detention, and killings of members with impunity
