Former President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has died. Zimbabwe’s founding leader died in a Singapore hospital on Friday morning at the age of 95.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa confirmed the death of Mugabe writing on his official Twitter account: “It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe (1/2)”.

“Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace (2/2)”.

Professor Jonathan Moyo, one of President Mugabe’s strongest ally and Zimbabwe’s former Minister of Higher Education tweeted:

“A dark cloud has enveloped Zimbabwe and beyond. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord!”.

Mugabe had been battling ill-health and President Mnangagwa told a Cabinet meeting recently that his doctor had discontinued treatment.

Mugabe was ousted from power in a military coup in November 2017, and he was being treated in Singapore since April.

Mugabe was forced to resign on Tuesday, November 21 as president of Zimbabwe after 37 years in power, ushering in a new era for the country.

There was jubilation in streets across the country following decades of Mugabe’s authoritarian rule. Mugabe’s departure renewed hope, and brought a sense of freedom to Zimbabweans, but the hope quickly dissipated as economic hardships continued even after Mugabe’s departure.
